You chunk chips because low point sat behind the ball. A chip is a full swing low point problem running at about fifteen percent speed, and at that speed the margin is fractions of an inch. The standard does not change around the green: ball first, then turf. What changes is that deceleration can destroy it in one swing.
Short answer. A duffed chip is a low point that arrived behind the ball. The club reached the bottom of its arc before it reached the ball, so it entered turf first. Move low point forward with an accelerating club head and a stable trail wrist, not with softer hands.

The Real Definition of a Duffed Chip (Not the Internet Version)
A duffed chip has one definition. The club head reached the low point of its arc before it reached the ball, so turf absorbed the energy. Everything you have been told about hinge, stance and grip sits downstream of that fact. I will not discuss technique until we know where the club bottomed out. That is the sequence I use with a driver: ball flight, then delivery, then cause.
The internet treats chipping as a separate skill with its own rulebook, and that framing keeps golfers stuck. Chipping is a full swing with the speed removed and the tolerance tightened. At full speed, a low point an inch behind the ball still produces a playable shot, because the head carries momentum through turf. At chipping speed that same inch moves the ball four feet. The forgiveness disappeared, not the fault, which is the argument behind mastering low point.

I do not coach a chipping method. I coach impact conditions, and the method is whatever delivers them for your body. Nothing there mentions how far you take the club back. Length matters only through what it does to those five.
Two of the five carry almost all the weight in short shots. Acceleration matters because a decelerating head drags low point backward as the club overtakes the hands. Trail wrist condition matters because late extension throws the head ahead of the handle. Cause and Effect: What's Actually Creating Your Duffed Chip
Four patterns produce nearly every duffed chip I see. Each is laid out the way I work it: pattern, delivery, impact, ball flight, strike quality. Find yours before you run a drill, because the wrong drill entrenches the fault. If two describe you, work the earlier one. Acceleration and pressure come before wrist condition.
Cause 1: Deceleration Through the Strike
Pattern. The backswing is longer than the shot needs, so you brake coming down to control distance. Delivery. As the hands slow, the head keeps its momentum and passes the handle, moving the arc backward. Impact. The sole meets turf before the leading edge reaches the ball. Ball flight. Low, short and dead, often less than half the intended carry. Strike quality. A deep bruise behind the ball and a muffled thud instead of a click.
Cause 2: Trail Wrist Extension Added Late
Pattern. The trail wrist adds extension from P6 into P7 while the lead wrist extends in sympathy. Delivery. The head is thrown ahead of the handle, shaft lean disappears and dynamic loft climbs. Impact. Low point moves behind the ball by as much as the hands moved back. Ball flight. Duffs and skulls alternating from one stroke, because the margin is smaller than the variation. Strike quality. Contact wanders vertically, and HackMotion is explicit that extension opens the face while flexion closes it.
Cause 3: Pressure That Never Establishes on the Lead Side
Pattern. You set up centred or trail-biased and never move, because the shot feels too small to warrant a shift. Delivery. With the centre of the swing behind the ball, the arc bottoms behind the ball. Impact. Turf first on good lies, buried leading edge on anything sitting down. Ball flight. Height and distance vary shot to shot with no pattern you can predict. Strike quality. Turf contact begins early, which is a pressure problem before it is a technique problem — see ground reaction forces.
Cause 4: Radius Collapse From "Soft Hands"
Pattern. You were told to soften the hands, so grip pressure drops below what holds the club against load. Delivery. The wrists become passive hinges and the head outruns the handle. Impact. Radius lengthens at the worst moment and low point retreats. Ball flight. Chunks on tight lies, skulls off any cushion, no repeatable carry. Strike quality. Marks scatter and the sound changes every shot, which is why I treat the four release patterns as required reading.

The Matchups That Fix It (Without a Full Swing Rebuild)
A matchup is a group of variables that must move together, because each compensates for the others. The primary one around the green is acceleration profile and backswing length. If the backswing is longer than the shot needs, the only way to control distance is to slow down, and that moves low point backward. Shorten the backswing and the same shot forces you to accelerate. Low point moves forward without a single technical thought.
The second matchup is trail wrist condition and hand path. A stable trail wrist only works if the hands keep travelling toward the target. If the hands stall, that same condition converts into a throw and you duff it. So I train them together: a handle that keeps moving, and a wrist that keeps its shape. Read wrist angles and shaft lean and then lead wrist flexion and compression to see why they are inseparable.
The third matchup is pressure distribution and ball position, and getting it wrong traps golfers between duffing and blading. Lead-side pressure puts the centre of the arc forward, so the ball must sit behind that centre. Move the ball forward as well and you scrape the ground anyway. The Measurement Plan (How I Prove the Fix)
I will not tell you a chipping change worked because it felt better. Feel is a lagging indicator during a pattern change, and around the green it misleads. Drills I Use Every Day to Create the Change Fast
Three drills, run in order, each with a mechanism, a procedure, video checkpoints and a pass mark. Do not run all three on day one, because the first must pass before the second means anything. Every one is built around the same measurable event: where the club enters the turf. None asks you to feel something, because feel is what got you here. Score them honestly and most duffing patterns resolve inside a week.
Drill 1: The Chalk Line Entry Test
What it fixes. It converts an invisible fault into a visible mark, so you stop guessing. How to do it. Draw a chalk line perpendicular to the target line, put the ball on it, and hit twenty chips. On video. Face-on the handle leads the head at contact; down-the-line the shaft is not rising through the ball. Ball flight and strike. A correct entry gives a click then a bruise, and the ball climbs normally. Common mistake. Steering the club to protect the line, which creates a jab.
Pass: sixteen of twenty marks begin on the target side of the line.
Fail: four or more begin behind the line, or no mark at all.
Drill 2: Short Back, Long Through
What it fixes. It rebuilds the acceleration profile by making a decelerating strike impossible. How to do it. Pick a landing spot, make a backswing you are certain is too small for it, and finish noticeably longer than you went back. On video. Count frames, because the through side should occupy fewer than the way back. Ball flight and strike. Carry holds or increases even though the backswing shrank, and the sound changes from thud to click. Common mistake. Lengthening the follow-through while still braking the hands, which produces a flip.
Pass: eight of ten with a through-swing visibly longer and entry ahead of the ball.
Fail: any shot where the head passes the handle before contact.
Drill 3: The Lead Forearm Shaft Constraint
What it fixes. It stops the trail wrist adding late extension by giving the fault a physical consequence. How to do it. Grip a short alignment stick alongside the club so it runs up your lead forearm, then chip at half size. On video. Face-on the stick stays clear of the forearm; down-the-line the head stays behind the hands. Ball flight and strike. Trajectory drops slightly and roll increases, the signature of restored forward shaft lean. Common mistake. Locking the wrists rigid, which removes all hinge; you want stable, not frozen.
Pass: ten consecutive chips with no stick contact and entry ahead of the ball.
Fail: two or more contacts in ten, or a stroke so rigid it stops brushing turf.

The Three Mistakes That Undo This
Reaching for a more lofted wedge. When chips come out low and short, the instinct is to add loft. More loft does not move your low point; it sharpens the leading edge's entry angle and reduces effective bounce. The same error a pitching wedge survives will bury a sixty degree. Learn the standard with a fifty-two and add loft afterward. Loft is a shot selection variable, never a low point solution.
Practising only from perfect lies on a mat. A mat lets the sole skid into the ball, hiding a low point sitting an inch behind where it belongs. Golfers build a pattern that works indoors and collapses the moment there is grass under the ball. That mismatch is why people duff on the course after a clean warm-up. Practise on real turf whenever you can, and use the chalk line when you cannot. The measurement matters more than the surface.
Changing three things at once. Duffing in front of people creates urgency, and urgency makes golfers change ball position, grip, stance and tempo together. When it improves, nothing can be attributed to anything, and when it returns you have no path back. My rule is one matchup at a time with a pass mark attached. No new change until the current one passes twice. That is slower for a week and quicker across a season.
The "Do Not Do This" Section
Do not accept "soft hands" as an instruction, because it is the most damaging cue in short game teaching. The intent is reasonable: less tension, and a club that works with the ground. What the golfer hears is hold it loosely, and grip pressure drops below what keeps the head behind the hands under load. The head outruns the handle, radius lengthens, and low point retreats. Replace it with something measurable: the handle keeps moving toward the target through contact.
Do not fix a duff by shoving the ball back and leaning the shaft forward at address. Address is a starting condition, and golfers who force lean there give it back through the strike. What you set survives only if pressure, hand path and wrist condition support it, which is the argument in why you do not have forward shaft lean. Set it, then verify it at contact on video. If the two disagree, the address change made you feel busy and nothing else.
Do not treat "you looked up" as an explanation. Head movement is a symptom of an arc that was never going to catch the ball cleanly. Golfers lift because the body senses the club is about to hit the ground early. Fix the low point and the head steadies without one instruction about your eyes. And no, you do not need a bad spell first — a correct change shows a cleaner mark the same day.
Practice Plan: Today and the Next Seven Days
Today, twenty minutes. Draw a chalk line and run Drill 1 for twenty chips, photographing the marks every five shots so you have a baseline. Then run Drill 2 for ten shots to one landing spot, counting frames if you are unsure the through-swing is longer. Finish with ten chips at normal intent and no constraint, scoring turf entry only. Stop at fifty balls, or at three consecutive marks behind the line, whichever comes first. That second condition is your stop sign.
Days two through seven, fifteen minutes a day. On odd days run Drills 1 and 2 for twenty chips; on even days run Drill 3, then chip to three landing spots in random order. Every session opens with the chalk line and closes with five shots at full intent. Once in the week, film five chips face-on and compare the handle at contact. Learn the ball-first-then-turf standard with a fifty-two or a nine iron, where the club helps you. Once turf entry sits ahead of the ball, loft becomes a trajectory decision instead of a rescue attempt. Most amateurs would score better using far less loft around the green.
How do I know if I am decelerating without a launch monitor?
Film the chip face-on and count frames. Measure the frames from the ball back to the top, then the frames to cover the equivalent distance through impact. If the through side takes as long or longer, you decelerated. You can also listen, because a decelerating strike sounds heavy and muffled while an accelerating one gives a click. Neither method needs equipment you do not already own.
Is chipping really the same skill as the full swing?
The impact conditions are identical; the speed and the tolerance are not. Low point forward of the ball, a stable trail wrist, a handle that keeps travelling, and a centred strike apply to a chip and a five iron alike.
