The answer lies not just in physical prowess but in mental fortitude and the art of consistent impact. It’s about embracing the process over the results, transforming practice into a purposeful journey rather than a mere exercise at the driving range.
I’ve observed a common thread among golfers who plateau: they focus intensely on immediate results. They spend hours at the driving range, hitting ball after ball without a clear purpose or strategy. This repetitive action might feel productive, but in reality, it’s akin to exercising without direction.
On the other hand, golfers who make significant strides understand that improvement isn’t just about the number of swings but the quality and intention behind each one. They prioritize mental fortitude, approaching each practice session with a clear goal and the patience to refine their technique incrementally. This is not easy to do and challenges our minds greatly. If it was easy, everyone would do it. It isn't about becoming a number, it is, as in life, becoming the best you can be at all things you do.
In a study done a few years ago on golfers trying to institute some new move to their golf swing, the researchers were trying to find out how long the golfer kept with it before giving up. This may shock some but the average was just over 2 attempts when they were poor shots. What is so interesting about this is that when I coach my high level golfers, they don't care about those poor results at all. No, they are more interested in the process of the new move and getting reps in on it. They view this as a challenge, not a time to give up and give in to what you already know doesn't work.
At EJS Golf, I have developed a methodology I call The Science of Better Golf. This approach is rooted in understanding the mechanics of the game and the psychological aspects that influence performance. It’s about dissecting every element of your swing, stance, and mindset to achieve consistent impact—the hallmark of a proficient golfer.
By focusing on the science behind each movement, we eliminate guesswork. Golfers begin to see patterns, understand the cause and effect of their actions, and make informed adjustments. This analytical approach empowers players to take control of their improvement journey.
I teach my golfers to understand the ball flight laws. I have read that over 95% of golfers out there have no idea why a golf ball flies the way it does. The science is out there and you don't even need a Trackman. Watch my video below that is on my YouTube channel where I explain how you can start to understand the ball flight laws. Understanding these laws is empowering.
When I talk about “true practice,” I’m referring to a deliberate and focused effort aimed at mastering specific aspects of your golf game. It’s not about the quantity of swings or the time spent on the driving range; it’s about the quality and intentionality behind each movement. Unlike casual practice, where the goals are often vague or undefined, true practice involves setting clear, measurable objectives for every session.
For example, instead of mindlessly hitting 100 balls without a plan, you might dedicate 15 minutes to perfecting your grip or refining your swing plane while watching yourself in a mirror. At EJS Golf, I emphasize the importance of this kind of focused practice. We use video analysis and swing diagnostics to help you understand precisely what needs improvement. This concentrated effort not only leads to meaningful progress over time but also helps ingrain proper techniques into your muscle memory.
The reality is stark: the true practice failure rate is over 90%. Many golfers aren’t willing to commit to this level of disciplined practice. They become discouraged by what they perceive as slow progress or get distracted by the allure of immediate results. But those who embrace true practice find that their skills improve exponentially. They start hitting more fairways, sinking more putts, and ultimately lowering their handicaps.
You might find it hard to believe, but with just 15 minutes of true practice per day, I can guide any golfer to reach a scratch handicap within a year. This isn’t some marketing gimmick or unrealistic promise; it’s a testament to the power of focused, intentional practice backed by scientific principles. At EJS Golf, I have developed a program that leverages neuroscience and biomechanics to optimize your practice sessions.
Imagine dedicating just a quarter of an hour each day to meticulously work on specific elements like your swing mechanics, short game finesse, or putting accuracy. Over the course of a year, these micro-investments of time compound into significant improvements. You’re not just swinging for the sake of swinging; you’re engaging in purposeful practice designed to target your weaknesses and build upon your strengths. This method has been proven effective time and again with my students here in Scottsdale.
One of the fundamental philosophies I instill in my students at EJS Golf is the importance of focusing on the process rather than the results. Golfers who make substantial improvements understand that the journey is more important than the destination. They find satisfaction and motivation in the daily commitment to betterment, viewing each practice session as a victory in itself.
This mindset shift is crucial for several reasons. First, it reduces the pressure that comes with obsessing over scores and outcomes. When the process becomes the goal, you’re free to fully engage with each moment of practice, making it more effective and enjoyable. Second, this approach fosters consistent growth. You’re no longer subject to the emotional highs and lows that come with every game but are steadily progressing toward your long-term objectives.
At EJS Golf, I incorporate mental conditioning techniques to help you adopt this mindset. I teach you how to set realistic goals, visualize success, and stay mentally resilient in the face of challenges. This holistic approach not only improves your golf game but also enhances your overall well-being. I have found meditation to be helpful for not only myself but for many of my students.
The lessons learned on the golf course have far-reaching implications beyond the fairways and greens. Just as dedicating 15 minutes of focused effort per day can dramatically improve your golf game, the same principle applies to virtually any area of life. Whether you’re learning a new language, developing a professional skill, or improving your physical fitness, consistent, focused practice places you in the 95th percentile over the course of a year.
You don’t have to be inherently great to achieve par in life; you just need commitment and the right guidance. Finding a good coach—someone who can lead you, provide constructive feedback, and keep you accountable—is invaluable. This concept is central to my coaching philosophy at EJS Golf. I strive to be more than just an instructor; I aim to be a mentor who helps you become the best version of yourself, both on and off the course.
For instance, one of my students applied the discipline and focus he learned during our golf sessions to his professional life. He reported not only a significant improvement in his golf handicap but also enhanced productivity and job satisfaction. Stories like this reinforce my belief in the transformative power of true practice and a process-oriented mindset.
Being recognized as one of the leading golf coaches in Scottsdale isn’t just about accolades for me; it’s about the proven results of my students and my genuine passion for teaching. At EJS Golf, I tailor my coaching to each individual’s needs, ensuring that you receive the personalized attention necessary for true improvement. I begin with a comprehensive assessment to understand your current skill level, goals, and areas for improvement. Next I find out what my students truly want out of our relationship. Knowing that I do everything in my power to deliver to you what you have asked me for.
My approach is holistic, combining technical instruction with mental conditioning and even physical fitness recommendations. I utilize advanced technologies like swing analysis software, launch monitors and 3D dual force plates along with 3D imaging to provide real-time feedback. Additionally, my focus on the psychological components of the game, teaching you strategies to manage stress, maintain focus, and make smarter decisions on the course will pay off in lower scores, quicker.

I’ve seen this transformation happen time and again with my students, and it never ceases to inspire me. I've taken multiple private lessons with Erik and he's been by far the best swing coach I have ever worked with. He has the ability to dissect your swing and make small changes for big improvements. What I love most about his lessons is they go far beyond the 1 or 2 hours you're with him. He follows up with videos of how you can improve at home and on the range. The value he provides is absolutely worth the cost of his sessions. I would recommend any golfer at any level who truly wants to get better to go see Erik.”

Erik is the best! and that is not an exaggeration. There has not been a single lesson where I haven't walked out and felt like a far better golfer than before. What can't be praised enough is the effort and dedication that Eric puts into each of his students, as his approach to fixing and improving my golf swing was specific to me. While teaching, Erik takes the extra time to truly dive into what he is trying to convey rather than just telling you, allowing for a better understanding. Beyond the instruction at the course, Erik sends specific drills to you from an app that allows for slow motion replays, letting you break down everything and work on your game at any time. I genuinely mean it when I say that I would recommend Erik to anyone wanting to improve their golf game, as he is not only a top not instructor but also a top notch person who cares about his students.
- Brennan K.
Erik is flat out a great coach and mentor! I highly recommend him! Working from the ground up, my swing is healthier and smooth! I wanted a coach that shared the same main principles as the late Tony Manzoni and Erik hits the mark! Found Erik by listening to the Golf Smarter podcast by Fred Greene and connected with EJS Golf through the Perfect Motion app. Erik is motivated and incredibly gifted at his craft!
