How to Stop Shanking for Good: The Heel-Strike Truth
A shank is a strike-location event, not a swing style. The hosel contacted the ball, which means the club head arrived farther from your body at impact than it was at address, or the face was open enough at a heel-biased strike to fire the ball sideways. Fix the strike location and the shank stops. Face spray settles the argument in a single swing.
Short answer. You shank because the ball met the hosel, not the face. That happens when the club head travels farther from your body through impact than it sat at address, or when an open face meets a heel strike. Spray the face, find the mark, then fix hand path and low point.

The Real Definition of a Shank (Not the Internet Version)
A shank is defined by one thing: the ball met the hosel, not the club face. Everything else you were told is a downstream story. I will not discuss the swing until we know where contact happened. That is sequence, not stubbornness: ball flight, then delivery, then cause. A cause assigned before the strike is measured is a guess.
There is a second shank most golfers never learn to name. The club head arrives so far inside the ball that the golfer throws the hands out to rescue it. The hosel gets there first. That golfer is not standing too close; he is delivering from the inside. Tell him to back away and it gets worse, which is where my post on curing the shank began.
Impact First: The Non-Negotiables I Coach
I do not coach a swing model. I coach impact, a short list of conditions the club must satisfy. For an iron off turf: low point forward of the ball, forward shaft lean, a centered strike, a face-to-path relationship that matches the shot, and a club head whose distance from your body matches address. Nothing there mentions your backswing. Those things matter only if they change one of the five.
The fifth condition owns the shank, and almost nobody trains it. Radius control is the distance from your center of rotation out to the club head. It is a joint product of hand path, pelvis position and lead wrist behaviour through P6. TrackMan reports Face Angle and Dynamic Loft at the impact location, not the geometric centre, so where you strike changes the numbers. Cause and Effect: What's Actually Creating Your Shank
Four patterns produce the large majority of shanks I see. Each is laid out the way I work it: pattern, delivery, impact, ball flight, strike quality. Find yours before you touch a drill, because the wrong drill entrenches the fault. If two describe you, work the earlier one. Hand path and pelvis come before face and low point.
Cause 1: Hand Path Moving Out Through the Strike
Pattern. The hands travel away from the body from P6 into P7 instead of working in and up. Delivery. The club head follows the handle, so radius grows at the worst possible moment. Impact. The hosel arrives where the toe should have been. Ball flight. The ball squirts sideways with no useful spin signature. Strike quality. The mark straddles the hosel and the sound is dead rather than compressed.
Cause 2: Early Extension Changing the Distance to the Ball
Pattern. The pelvis moves toward the ball line because the pressure shift stalled. Delivery. Your body takes the space the arms needed, so under speed the arms push out. Impact. The club moves farther from your center while the ball stays put. Ball flight. Sideways heel strikes, blocks, and recovery hooks. Strike quality. Heel marks that wander vertically, because early extension drags low point with it — see ground reaction forces.
Cause 3: An Open Face Meeting a Heel-Biased Strike
Pattern. The lead wrist holds extension deep into the release, so the face is still open. Delivery. An open face presents the hosel forward of the leading edge, shifting contact toward the neck. Impact. A survivable heel strike on a square face becomes a hosel strike. Ball flight. The ball starts well right of intent for a right-handed golfer, since the face dominates start line. Strike quality. Marks look smeared, and HackMotion is direct: extension opens the face and flexion closes it.
Cause 4: A Low Point That Drifts Behind the Ball
Pattern. Low point sits at or behind the ball, so the club travels out and up through contact. Delivery. On that part of the arc the head is farther from your body than at the bottom. Impact. Heel contact mixes with thin and fat strikes inside one session. Ball flight. Height and distance vary wildly and curvature never repeats. Strike quality. Marks scatter with no cluster, which is why you start with mastering low point.

The Matchups That Fix It (Without a Full Swing Rebuild)
A matchup is a set of variables that must move together, because each compensates for the others. Grip, wrist condition, release, hand path and pelvis form one set. Change one without the rest and you trade a shank for a snap hook. So we change in pairs and verify each before adding the next. That is why I rarely rebuild a swing to stop a shank.
The first matchup is pelvis space and hand path. If the pelvis moves toward the ball line, the hands have no route except outward. Restore the space first: lead-side clearance, a pressure shift finishing toward the lead heel, a trail hip working back. Only then does an in-and-up hand path become available. I check it on the pressure mat and on video at P6, and both must agree.
The second matchup is face condition and release; the third is low point and shaft lean. A lead wrist holding extension through P6 needs a face-rotating release or a weaker presentation. Low point and lean travel together: low point without lean glances, lean without low point goes fat. Trained as a pair they produce a centered strike almost as a byproduct. Read the four release patterns, then wrist angles and shaft lean.
The Measurement Plan (How I Prove the Fix)
I will not tell you a change worked because it felt better. Feel is a lagging and deceptive indicator during a pattern change. Foot spray answers the defining question, and TrackMan's impact-location screen answers it precisely. The pressure mat shows whether pressure reached the lead side in time. Each instrument answers one question, and you should know which to read. Strike map first, because it defines the fault. Delivery second, because it explains the fault. Never read a number without knowing where the ball was struck, or a strike map without knowing whether pressure moved. To read your own numbers, start with be your own TrackMan.

Drills I Use Every Day to Create the Change Fast
Three drills, in order. Each has a mechanism, a procedure, video checkpoints and a pass/fail you can score alone. Do not run all three on day one. The first has to pass before the second means anything. My post on seven proven drills for mishits covers the strike-quality work I pair with these.
Drill 1: The Outside Gate
What it fixes. It makes an outward club head path impossible without a consequence. How to do it. Place a headcover just outside the ball, a club head's width off the toe, and hit half-speed nine irons. On video. Face-on the handle exits toward the lead shoulder; down-the-line the head stays under the address plane. Ball flight and strike. Marks move toward center and slightly toe side. Common mistake. Pulling the handle in with the arms stalls the body, so keep rotating.
Pass: eight of ten struck without touching the headcover, marks center or toe side.
Fail: any contact with it, or three or more heel-side marks in ten.
Drill 2: Deliberate Toe Bias
What it fixes. Error reversal resets your model of where the ball sits relative to the club head. How to do it. Spray the face, then genuinely try to hit the ball off the toe for ten swings at sixty percent. On video. Face-on the trail shoulder stays deeper; down-the-line the head tracks closer to the body. Ball flight and strike. Most golfers aiming at the toe hit the center, and those who reach it see draw-side curvature from gear effect. Common mistake. Standing farther away instead of changing intent.
Pass: six of ten marks toe side of center with the setup unchanged.
Fail: marks still cluster heel side, or you moved your address distance.
Drill 3: Pelvis Space with a Trail-Hip Constraint
What it fixes. It restores the room your arms need by stopping the pelvis moving toward the ball line. How to do it. Set an alignment rod just outside your trail hip so it touches you only if the pelvis moves in. On video. Face-on the lead hip clears and the belt line rotates; down-the-line daylight stays between you and the rod. Ball flight and strike. Strike location stabilises horizontally first, and the sound changes before the ball flight. Common mistake. Sliding the pelvis toward the target instead of rotating.
Pass: ten rehearsals and five half shots with no rod contact and no heel marks.
Fail: any pelvis contact under speed, or a lateral slide replacing rotation.

The Three Mistakes That Undo This
Standing farther from the ball. This is the most common self-prescription and close to the worst. Backing away lengthens your radius at address, so the head has more room to drift outward. It also encourages the arms to reach, which pulls the pelvis toward the ball line. I watch golfers retreat an inch at a time until they barely reach it. Setup distance is rarely the cause.
Swinging slower and shorter to survive. Reducing speed hides the fault without changing it. A hidden fault returns the moment adrenaline arrives on the first tee. A shortened swing also removes the pressure shift that created your lead-side space. I would rather you hit ten committed half-speed shots with a constraint than fifty tentative full ones. Tentative is not the same as controlled.
Changing three things at once. When a golfer fears a miss, the instinct is to change everything, and then nothing can be attributed to anything. Adjust grip, hand path and pelvis together and the shank may leave, but you cannot rebuild it later. My rule is one matchup at a time with a pass/fail attached. No new change until the current one passes twice. That is slower for a week and far faster over a season.
The "Do Not Do This" Section
Do not accept "you came over the top" as an explanation. Path and strike location are related but not the same variable. Plenty of golfers with a club path well left of target for a right-handed golfer never shank a ball. The story survives because it is easy to say and impossible to falsify. Measure the strike, then talk about path.
Do not fix the shank by aiming away from it and steering. Aim changes your path, and path changes face-to-path. TrackMan is explicit that face-to-path is a key factor in the expected curvature, with the ball curving toward the face and away from the path. So aiming away adds a curvature problem on top of a strike problem. Aim where you want the ball to start and fix the delivery underneath.
Do not chase a stronger or weaker grip as a standalone cure. Grip changes face condition at a given wrist position, which is relevant to cause three. Changing it without changing wrist condition and release moves the miss rather than removing it. I have watched golfers strengthen the grip, hook it, weaken it back, and land where they began. And no, you do not have to play badly first — a correct change shows a cleaner strike immediately.
Practice Plan: Today and the Next Seven Days
Today, twenty minutes. Spray the face and hit ten seven irons at sixty percent, photographing every mark. Run Drill 2 for ten balls, because the toe-bias reset is the fastest intervention available. Then run Drill 1 for ten balls with the gate in place, scoring pass/fail honestly. Stop at forty balls, or at three heel-side marks in a row, whichever comes first. That second condition is your stop sign.
Days two through seven, fifteen minutes a day. On odd days run Drills 1 and 2 for twenty balls; on even days run Drill 3 plus fifteen half shots. Every session starts with a sprayed face and ends with five shots at full intent, no constraint. Once in the week, film five swings and compare the head's distance from your body at address against P7. My 15-minute practice plan suits this block, and the practice guide covers randomised reps. How This Fits Your Whole Swing
The shank is not a separate discipline, which is why golfers who fix it keep meeting it again. Everything here is radius control and low point control in a frightening costume. Those skills govern compression, distance control and tight lies. Restore pelvis space and stabilise hand path and your strike improves across the set. Move low point forward with the shaft leaning and dynamic loft falls, spin loft tightens, and the ball compresses.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I suddenly start shanking out of nowhere?
It is almost never sudden mechanically. A pattern drifts gradually, and the strike migrates toward the heel until it crosses onto the hosel. It feels sudden because ball flight is binary: a heel strike is poor, a hosel strike is catastrophic. Spray the face when you are striking it well and you have a baseline. That baseline makes the drift visible long before it becomes a shank.
Does standing closer to or farther from the ball fix a shank?
Neither does reliably, and standing farther away often makes it worse. Backing away encourages the arms to reach and the pelvis to move toward the ball line. Setup distance sits below hand path, pelvis position, face condition and low point. If your setup is genuinely extreme, a coach fixes it in thirty seconds. Measure strike location first and revisit setup only after the delivery causes are ruled out.
Can a shank be caused by an open club face rather than by hand path?
Yes, and it is the cause most golfers never consider. An open face at delivery puts the hosel slightly ahead of the leading edge, shifting the contactable surface toward the neck. A mediocre heel contact on a square face becomes a hosel contact on an open one. HackMotion's material on wrist action is explicit: extension opens the face and flexion closes it. That is why I check wrist condition before assuming the hands moved out.
Do I need a launch monitor to fix my shank?
No. A can of foot spray answers the defining question, and that alone separates the four causes into two groups. A launch monitor makes it faster and more precise, and impact-location data plus face-to-path settles ambiguous cases. But ordering matters more than equipment: strike location first, delivery second, cause third. Start with spray and add measurement when the spray stops giving a clear answer. Golfers who buy the technology before they run the spray usually end up with more numbers and the same shank.
Why do I only shank wedges and short irons?
Shorter clubs sit more upright and swing on a steeper arc, putting the hosel closer to the ball line. They are also the clubs golfers decelerate and steer most, because the shots feel easy. Add a shorter swing that reduces the pressure shift and you have built the pattern that produces heel contact. The fault is the same as with a mid iron; the equipment is less forgiving. Run the drills with a nine iron, then transfer down.
Stop treating the shank as a mystery and start treating it as evidence. The hosel met the ball, so the club head was somewhere it had not been at address. There are four realistic reasons: hand path drifting out, the pelvis stealing the arms' space, an open face at a heel strike, or a low point behind the ball. Spray the face, read the mark, change one matchup. Then the shank stops being frightening, because it stops being unpredictable.
