Hi Friends and Golfers this is Coach Erik Schjolberg from EJS Golf Academy, the number one rated golf coach in Scottsdale, AZ. I've been a professional golf coach for over 25 years, and I've seen firsthand how golf can serve as a powerful metaphor for life. The lessons learned on the golf course can be applied to various aspects of our lives, teaching us important values such as acceptance, patience, and the significance of our words. I will share some stories throughout about what I have learned through golf. I can't thank golf enough and the introduction to it from my father for what I have learned and who I have become.

Golf is not just a physical game; it's a mental one as well. The ability to stay focused, maintain a positive mindset, and manage emotions is crucial to excel in golf. These skills mirror the challenges we face in our everyday lives. Just like in life, golf presents us with numerous obstacles and setbacks. It's in these moments that we have an opportunity to cultivate acceptance and resilience.
Golf, much like life, is riddled with challenges that test our mental fortitude. Whether it's a difficult shot from the bunker or a tricky putt on a sloping green, every obstacle in golf is a chance to strengthen our mental resolve. Learning to embrace these challenges, rather than fear them, transforms our approach to the game and to life. It teaches us to view difficulties not as setbacks, but as opportunities for growth and improvement. This is the choice we get to make. Some look at it like an opportunity and others don't.
A key aspect of mastering golf is the ability to stay present in the moment. This skill is crucial not only in golf but also in our everyday lives. In golf, being present means focusing on the current shot, not the last one or the one to come. It’s about immersing oneself in the task at hand and letting go of past mistakes and future anxieties. This skill of being in the ‘now’ helps in maintaining a clear and focused mind, crucial for making the best decisions both on and off the course. This thought will stop one from counting their score to see what they will get on a hole if this or that happens. I have seen many a rounds ruined by a player saying if I just par the last two holes this or trhat will happen.
Golf also teaches us about emotional resilience. The game is a rollercoaster of emotions – from the highs of a successful shot to the lows of a missed putt. Learning to manage these emotional swings is vital. It's about accepting that not every day will be a good golf day, just as not every day in life is smooth sailing. Developing emotional resilience helps in maintaining composure, ensuring that one bad shot or one bad hole doesn't ruin an entire round, or a single setback doesn't disrupt our entire life. When we think big picture it becomes easier to manage the ebbs and flows of life.
Acceptance is an essential quality that golf teaches us. We learn to accept that not every shot will be perfect, that mistakes happen, and that we must adapt to changing circumstances. By accepting the inherent unpredictability of the game, we can let go of frustration and approach each shot with a fresh perspective. This acceptance is a skill that can be transferred to our daily lives, helping us navigate the unpredictable nature of life with grace and resilience.
Golf is a game that demands patience. In a world that often prizes speed and immediate results, golf teaches us the value of taking our time. Each round is a lesson in patience, from carefully planning a strategy to executing each shot with precision. This patience is crucial, both on and off the course. It teaches us to approach tasks with a calm, steady hand and to understand that great results often require time and effort.
Alongside patience, golf instills in us the virtue of perseverance. It's about continuing to play even when the game gets tough, about pushing through the challenges and not giving up. In golf, as in life, the path to success is rarely straight. It's filled with obstacles, unexpected turns, and moments of doubt. But by persevering, by staying committed to our goals despite the setbacks, we learn the true meaning of resilience and determination. Golf is a tough sport and that is evidenced by the facts that so many people quit golf every year. The reason people quit is because of the difficulty.
One of the most valuable lessons golf offers is the ability to adapt to changing conditions. Whether it's a sudden shift in the wind or an unforeseen obstacle on the course, golfers must constantly adjust their strategies and techniques. This adaptability is a crucial life skill. It reminds us that change is inevitable and that our ability to adapt is key to overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities.
Every round of golf, every shot, is a learning opportunity. Golf teaches us to analyze our actions, understand our mistakes, and use that knowledge to improve. This continuous cycle of learning and improvement is integral to personal and professional growth. It encourages a mindset of lifelong learning, where every experience, good or bad, is a chance to learn something new and become a better version of ourselves.
Furthermore, golf teaches us patience. It's a slow-paced sport that requires precision and careful planning. Rushing through a shot or becoming impatient can lead to poor results. Similarly, in life, impatience can often lead to impulsive decisions and undesirable outcomes. Golf teaches us to slow down, assess the situation, and proceed with calculated actions. This lesson is invaluable in our fast-paced world where patience can often be the key to success.
In golf, as in life, our words carry weight. The words we use to communicate with ourselves and others can greatly impact our performance and relationships. When playing golf, it's common for negative thoughts and self-criticism to creep into our minds after a bad shot. However, by practicing positive self-talk and reframing our thoughts, we can regain confidence and improve our game. The same applies to life. By choosing to use positive and encouraging language, we can uplift ourselves and those around us.
One of the most profound lessons golf imparts is the importance of personal responsibility. In golf, you are solely responsible for your own performance. There are no teammates to rely on or blame for mistakes. This teaches us to take ownership of our actions and outcomes in life. It's a lesson that I emphasize in my coaching at EJS Golf Academy, whether I'm working with PGA Tour Professionals, advanced Juniors, college golfers, or anyone committed to daily practice.
Golf also teaches us the value of perseverance. It's a game that requires continuous practice and improvement. Every golfer, regardless of skill level, faces challenges and setbacks. By persisting through difficulties on the course, we develop the resilience to overcome obstacles in life. This is a lesson I instill in all my students, and it's a cornerstone of my coaching philosophy.
Golf teaches us the art of concentration and focus. To execute a successful shot, golfers must block out distractions and maintain their attention on the task at hand. This skill translates to our daily lives, where concentration and focus are vital for productivity and success. Beyond the physical demands, golf is a mental game that challenges players to overcome internal barriers. Just as a golfer must navigate the course, they must also navigate their own thoughts and emotions. This mental agility – the ability to control one's thoughts, switch strategies, and stay calm under pressure – is crucial in many aspects of life. It teaches us to manage stress, make thoughtful decisions, and remain composed in challenging situations.
In golf, every shot requires careful consideration and strategic planning. Players must evaluate distances, consider environmental factors, and choose the right club for each situation. This level of strategic thinking and decision making is directly transferable to personal and professional life. It sharpens our ability to assess situations, weigh options, and make informed decisions, a skill that is invaluable in navigating life's complex choices.
Golf is not a game of haste; it teaches the virtue of patience. Waiting for the right moment to take a shot, adapting to changing course conditions, and dealing with unexpected setbacks are all part of the game. These experiences cultivate patience and resilience, teaching us the importance of timing and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances in our daily lives. Every golfer faces challenges, from difficult course layouts to competitive pressure. Overcoming these challenges builds resilience, an essential quality in both golf and life. This resilience is about bouncing back from setbacks, learning from failures, and continuously striving to improve. It reinforces the idea that perseverance and a positive attitude can lead to success and personal growth.
In addition to concentration and focus, golf is an excellent practice in mindfulness. On the course, golfers must remain acutely aware of their surroundings, their body movements, and the subtle nuances of their swing. This heightened state of awareness is akin to mindfulness, where one is fully present in the moment, conscious of their thoughts and actions but not overwhelmed by them. This practice of mindfulness, cultivated on the golf course, can significantly enhance our everyday lives, making us more attentive, aware, and emotionally balanced.
Golf also teaches the delicate balance between physical and mental discipline. While physical skills are essential, mental prowess is equally important. A golfer's mindset can greatly influence their physical performance. This symbiotic relationship between body and mind is a powerful lesson from golf. It teaches us that our physical actions and mental state are deeply interconnected, and mastering this balance is key to success in any endeavor.
Another invaluable lesson from golf is the importance of strategic planning and execution. Golfers must constantly assess the course, factor in elements like wind and terrain, and plan their shots accordingly. This strategic thinking, the ability to foresee challenges, and plan steps to navigate them, is a critical skill in life. Whether it's in our careers, personal goals, or relationships, the ability to strategize and execute plans efficiently can set the foundation for success and fulfillment.
Golf is unpredictable, much like life. Despite careful planning, golfers often face unforeseen circumstances that require quick thinking and adaptability. Learning to adapt to these situations on the course helps build resilience and flexibility in other areas of life. It reinforces the understanding that while we can plan to the best of our abilities, the ability to adapt to and embrace the unexpected is just as important.
Golf is not just a game; it's a transformative journey that can shape our character and mindset. As an expert golf coach and psychologist, I've witnessed firsthand how the lessons learned on the golf course can positively impact individuals in their personal and professional lives. By embracing the mental challenges, accepting the imperfections, and understanding the power of words, we can become not only great golfers but also better individuals.

Now, let me share a story about one of my students. This student came to me for golf lessons and over the course of a year, he shared with me his struggle with alcohol addiction. As a golf coach and someone who has personally experienced the challenges of alcohol addiction, I was able to provide him with guidance and support. We would go out on the course and I would answer question after question for him about his thoughts, how he could restore his dignity, and how he could navigate his path to recovery. I turned to alcohol at an early age to help me not have to feel the pain I felt both physically and mentally when my playing career ended. I just know that after 15 years of sobriety that this world is much better sober. Golf has given me everything and has taken much because of my body. I believe life is the same way. Without the bad, we wouldn't know the good.
This student found solace in golf and through our conversations, he was able to apply the lessons he learned on the golf course to his battle with addiction. He learned the importance of patience, acceptance, and personal responsibility. He learned to accept his situation, be patient with his recovery, and take responsibility for his actions. Today, he is sober and credits golf for giving him the tools to overcome his addiction. This is the transformative power of golf. It's more than just a game; it's a journey of personal growth and self-improvement.

I've taken multiple private lessons with Erik and he's been by far the best swing coach I have ever worked with. He has the ability to dissect your swing and make small changes for big improvements. What I love most about his lessons is they go far beyond the 1 or 2 hours you're with him. He follows up with videos of how you can improve at home and on the range. The value he provides is absolutely worth the cost of his sessions. I would recommend any golfer at any level who truly wants to get better to go see Erik.”

Erik is the best! and that is not an exaggeration. There has not been a single lesson where I haven't walked out and felt like a far better golfer than before. What can't be praised enough is the effort and dedication that Eric puts into each of his students, as his approach to fixing and improving my golf swing was specific to me. While teaching, Erik takes the extra time to truly dive into what he is trying to convey rather than just telling you, allowing for a better understanding. Beyond the instruction at the course, Erik sends specific drills to you from an app that allows for slow motion replays, letting you break down everything and work on your game at any time. I genuinely mean it when I say that I would recommend Erik to anyone wanting to improve their golf game, as he is not only a top not instructor but also a top notch person who cares about his students.
- Brennan K.
Erik is flat out a great coach and mentor! I highly recommend him! Working from the ground up, my swing is healthier and smooth! I wanted a coach that shared the same main principles as the late Tony Manzoni and Erik hits the mark! Found Erik by listening to the Golf Smarter podcast by Fred Greene and connected with EJS Golf through the Perfect Motion app. Erik is motivated and incredibly gifted at his craft!
