Setup for Success | The Role of Address Position in Shaft Lean

Introduction:

Your address position is the foundation of your golf swing and plays a crucial role in achieving proper shaft lean. A correct setup ensures you are in the best position to make solid contact with the ball. In this blog post, we'll explore how your address position influences shaft lean and provide tips for setting up correctly to improve your performance.

bad vs good posture at address

Understanding Address Position:

The address position refers to your stance and alignment before you start your swing. Key elements of a good address position include your stance width, body alignment, posture, and hand position. A correct address position sets the stage for achieving proper shaft lean and making consistent contact with the ball. Remember this though, there is no fundamental that says someone needs to be a certain way. Golfers aim up open and draw and vice versa.

Common Address Position Mistakes:

Improper address position can lead to poor shaft lean and inconsistent ball striking. Common mistakes include standing too close or too far from the ball, improper body alignment, and incorrect hand position. These errors can affect your swing path and impact position, leading to inconsistent results. Identifying and correcting these mistakes is essential for improving your setup.

Stance and Alignment:

Your stance should be shoulder-width apart, with your feet, hips, and shoulders aligned based on other match-ups. Alignment helps promote a proper swing path and ensures your body is in the correct position to achieve shaft lean based on what you do and your match-ups. Practice setting up with alignment sticks to check your stance and alignment and experiment with your shot pattern and see what your flight is. Remember that this is not a fundamental.

Posture:

Good posture is crucial for maintaining balance and control throughout your swing. Bend from your hips, keeping your back straight and knees slightly flexed. Your arms should hang naturally, and your weight should be evenly distributed between your feet. Practicing your posture in front of a mirror can help you achieve and maintain a correct setup.

Hand Position:

Your hands should be positioned slightly ahead of the ball at address. This position promotes a forward shaft lean and helps you achieve a descending blow at impact. Practice setting up with your hands ahead of the ball to develop the muscle memory needed for proper shaft lean. For those that hook i would like to see the hands at the ball.

from setup to impact

Conclusion:

A correct address position is essential for achieving proper shaft lean and improving your overall performance. By understanding the key elements of a good setup and practicing with a consistent address position, you can enhance your ball striking and achieve better results on the course. Regular practice and professional guidance can help you refine your setup and achieve a more consistent and powerful swing. Remember this, get consistent.

I've taken multiple private lessons with Erik and he's been by far the best swing coach I have ever worked with. He has the ability to dissect your swing and make small changes for big improvements. What I love most about his lessons is they go far beyond the 1 or 2 hours you're with him. He follows up with videos of how you can improve at home and on the range. The value he provides is absolutely worth the cost of his sessions. I would recommend any golfer at any level who truly wants to get better to go see Erik.”

Erik is the best! and that is not an exaggeration. There has not been a single lesson where I haven't walked out and felt like a far better golfer than before. What can't be praised enough is the effort and dedication that Eric puts into each of his students, as his approach to fixing and improving my golf swing was specific to me. While teaching, Erik takes the extra time to truly dive into what he is trying to convey rather than just telling you, allowing for a better understanding. Beyond the instruction at the course, Erik sends specific drills to you from an app that allows for slow motion replays, letting you break down everything and work on your game at any time. I genuinely mean it when I say that I would recommend Erik to anyone wanting to improve their golf game, as he is not only a top not instructor but also a top notch person who cares about his students.

Erik is flat out a great coach and mentor! I highly recommend him! Working from the ground up, my swing is healthier and smooth! I wanted a coach that shared the same main principles as the late Tony Manzoni and Erik hits the mark! Found Erik by listening to the Golf Smarter podcast by Fred Greene and connected with EJS Golf through the Perfect Motion app. Erik is motivated and incredibly gifted at his craft!
