The Science of Better Golf - Consistent Impact

As Coach Erik Schjolberg of EJS Golf in Scottsdale, AZ, I'm excited to share with you the core principles of my teaching philosophy: The Science of Better Golf - Consistent Impact. My approach is designed to help golfers improve immediately, without the need to get worse before getting better.

The Foundation: Consistent Impact

At the heart of my teaching is the concept of consistent impact. This is the key to unlocking your potential and seeing immediate improvements in your game. Here's why it's so crucial:

Low Point Control: The low point of your swing arc is critical for solid contact. For iron shots, we want the low point to be just after the ball, ensuring you hit down and through it. With drivers, the low point should be behind the ball for an upward strike. Understanding and controlling your low point is fundamental to achieving consistent, solid contact with every club in your bag.

D-Plane Understanding: The D-Plane concept combines club path angle, face angle, angle of attack, and dynamic loft. By mastering these elements, you can optimize your ball flight for maximum distance and accuracy. This advanced understanding allows you to shape shots intentionally and adapt to various course conditions.

Immediate Improvement

My goal is to help you improve from your very first lesson. Here's how we achieve this:

Analyzing Forces: Using advanced technology like Trackman 4, 3D Force Plates, and 3D Video Analysis, we can precisely measure the forces at play in your swing. This data-driven approach allows us to make targeted improvements quickly. By identifying inefficiencies in your swing, we can make small adjustments that lead to significant improvements in both distance and accuracy.

Optimizing Energy Transfer: By focusing on efficient body movements and proper sequencing, we can maximize the energy transfer from your body to the club and ultimately to the ball. This leads to increased distance without necessarily swinging harder. We'll work on creating a kinetic chain that starts from the ground up, ensuring that every part of your body contributes to a powerful, efficient swing.

The Power of Consistent Practice

I advocate for a 15-minute daily practice routine tailored to your specific needs. This approach ensures steady improvement without overwhelming your schedule. Here's what it involves:

1. Focused Drills: Based on our analysis, I'll provide you with specific drills to reinforce proper mechanics. These drills are designed to ingrain the correct movements into your muscle memory, making them second nature when you're on the course.

2. Technology Integration: Utilize tools like the Perfect Motion app to review and refine your swing between lessons. This allows you to get instant feedback on your practice sessions, ensuring you're always working towards improvement.

3. Feedback Loop: Regular check-ins and adjustments keep you on track for continuous improvement. We'll use video analysis and data from your practice sessions to fine-tune your technique and address any new challenges that arise.

Beyond the Swing: A Holistic Approach

While consistent impact is our primary focus, I don't neglect other aspects of the game:

Course Management: Learn to adapt your strategy based on course conditions and your strengths. We'll work on decision-making skills that will help you navigate any course more effectively.

Mental Game: Develop the confidence and focus needed to perform under pressure. I'll teach you techniques to manage stress, maintain concentration, and build resilience on the course.

Physical Conditioning: Understand how improved strength and flexibility can enhance your golf performance. We'll discuss exercises and stretches that specifically benefit your golf game, helping you prevent injuries and increase your power and endurance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How quickly can I expect to see improvements in my game?

A: Many of my students see noticeable improvements after just one lesson. By focusing on consistent impact and efficient energy transfer, we can often make small adjustments that yield significant results immediately. However, lasting improvement comes with consistent practice and application of the principles we work on.

Q: I've tried lessons before without much success. How is your approach different?

A: My approach is based on scientific principles and uses cutting-edge technology to provide precise feedback. Unlike traditional methods that rely on generic tips, I tailor my instruction to your unique swing characteristics. We focus on understanding the 'why' behind each change, empowering you to make adjustments on your own.

Q: I'm a high handicapper. Can your scientific approach still help me?

A: Absolutely! In fact, high handicappers often see the most dramatic improvements. By establishing a solid foundation based on scientific principles, we can quickly identify and correct major issues in your swing. My goal is to make the game more enjoyable and less frustrating for players of all levels.

Q: How do online lessons compare to in-person instruction?

A: While in-person lessons allow for hands-on adjustments, my online lessons are highly effective thanks to advanced video analysis tools and real-time feedback. Many students find the convenience of online lessons allows for more frequent check-ins and faster progress. We can work together to determine which format best suits your needs and schedule.
